Welcome to First Grade...Home of the Mighty Dogs! Hello Parents and New First Grader,
I am very excited to welcome you to your class for the 2019 – 2020 school year! I’ve heard so many great things about you and I’m thrilled to have many new faces to get to know! I can’t wait for the school year to start!
A first grader is one of the “BIG KIDS” at school. First graders get their very own desk, get to play on the big playground, and they even check out library books to take home to read! First graders learn to work independently, together in teams, and in partners both sharing ideas and what they know every day. It is so great to be a first grader!
These are the hours of school: 8:00 – 12:51 on Mondays, and 8:00 – 2:18 Tuesday through Friday. In the morning students are allowed to play on the playground starting at 7:45. Our lineup letter is A. Students can leave their backpacks at the line up letter A before going out to play. When the first bell rings they need to freeze and wait for the whistle to be blown before WALKING to find their backpack and line up and wait for the second bell. When the second bell rings they will WALK as a group to the classroom (Room 3) and wait outside for the teacher. The first day parents are allowed on campus and I ask that they say good bye at line up letter A and let the students come into the classroom on their own to find their very own desk!
PLEASE make sure you tell your child what is for snack and what to save for lunch so there is no confusion. Snack time is at 10:10 AM, during morning recess. Lunch is at 11:25 AM. You may even want to put them in separate bags for the first week.
At the end of the day, you may meet your child at the front gate or in the cage for car pickup. I will walk the class up to the front gate every day. During the first week, I will keep all students with me until they see their parents and help the bus riders get to their bus. BUS RIDERS, please make sure you know the letter of your bus (parents, you might even want to pin a tag to your child’s backpack with their bus letter to help him/her remember which bus to get onto)! If there is a change in the way your child normally goes home please either email me, send a note with your child, or call the office and they will get a message to the room.
I’ve included a list of school supplies that students will use throughout the year. Please check it. The most important item you will be responsible to replace is your child's headphones. Due to normal wear and tear, you will most likely replace these at least a couple of times. Making sure your child has their own headphones reduces the risk of sharing the limited supply of classroom headphones (I think I only have 4 classroom headphones that can be shared), which reduces the risk of lice. Please label the headphones with a sharpie marker with your child's name and show them how to wrap the cord around the headphones to store them away neatly.
I know the school year hasn’t quite begun yet but I would love to already start communicating with you, so if you have an email address I would appreciate it if you could send me a quick email saying hi so I could start an email group for our class elenalord@vistausd.org
Soon we will be off with a “howling” start (our classroom mascot is a dog) to a productive year together. I hope everyone is ready to “pounce” into meeting new friends, working hard, and having fun! I’ll see you on Wednesday, August 15th for the first day of school and the very next day, Thursday, August 23rd for Back to School Night. There will be a principal’s presentation in the MPR at 5:30 and teacher presentation in room 3 at 6:00 and 6:30.
